Terms of Use
Last updated: April 2026 Open Phonics is free and open-source software released under the MIT License. You may use, copy, modify, and distribute the software for any purpose, including commercial use, subject to the terms of the MIT License. Open Phonics is provided as an educational tool for teaching reading through systematic phonics. It is designed to be used by adults (teachers, tutors, parents) working with learners. The program is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. We do not guarantee specific educational outcomes. The effectiveness of the program depends on consistent, correct use following the Direct Instruction methodology. The lesson content, stories, and word lists are original works created for this project. The instructional methodology is based on publicly available Direct Instruction principles developed by Siegfried Engelmann. The fonts used (Lora, Source Sans 3, Comic Neue) are open-source fonts served via Bunny Fonts. As described in our Privacy Policy, Open Phonics does not collect or store any personal data on our servers. All progress data is stored locally on your device. Open Phonics is not a substitute for professional educational assessment or intervention. If a learner is experiencing significant reading difficulties, consult a qualified reading specialist or educator. We may update these terms from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date.License
