Phase 5 introduces diphthongs, additional digraphs, the short-oo sound, and the unvoiced th — filling in important gaps for fluent reading.

What to Expect

By the end of Phase 5, the learner has all the phoneme knowledge needed for basic English decoding. Ready for consonant blends and advanced patterns.

Tips for This Phase

These patterns fill in gaps the learner may have been guessing at. Emphasize the difference between voiced th (buzz in throat) and unvoiced th (no buzz). Same for long oo (moon) vs short oo (book).
